14:00 - Kevin Rudd has fronted a media conference to announce his intention to put the issue of fixed four year terms to referendum, should Labor win the election.

Mr Rudd told reporters that he considered it improper for a prime minister to decide the election date on a whim. "It is just wrong. I think it is entirely appropriate to have fixed four year terms into the future and that's why we would be seeking a mandate for that at a subsequent referendum," he said.

The conference was quite a jocular affair with Mr Rudd appearing at ease and, at one stage, sharing a hearty laugh with the assembled journos.
