Kevin Rudd and Labor environment spokesman Peter Garrett today pledged $200 million to help farmers and landowners tackle climate change and water quality issues around the Great Barrier Reef.

Speaking during a visit to the reef this morning, Rudd announced that the thrust of the plan is a $146 million water quality grants scheme.

He said the scheme
would benefit the reef, local landholders and farmers, and tourism and fishing industries.

"The Great Barrier Reef is Australia's greatest natural asset and we have a responsibility to the next generation of Australians to do whatever we can to properly preserve it."
